And
there were also two other, malefactors, led with him to be put to death. And when
they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the
malefactors. And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him, saying, If
thou be Christ, save thyself and us. But the other answering rebuked him, saying,
Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation? And he said unto
Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom. And Jesus said unto him,
Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise. And the veil of
the temple was rent in the midst. And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he
said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up
the ghost.
LUKE 23:32-46
Christ and the thieves are superimposed upon the three evident crucifixes of the
Sephirothic Tree or "Tree of Life" of Qabalah: The inferior half is associated with self-conceptions
and their inter-conflict as they each desire manifestation and survival ("save
thyself and us"). Central is Paroketh (the "Veil"), "rent in
the midst" upon the self-surrendering Christ-ghost's ascent. The
inter-sephirothic abyss called Daath ("Knowledge") is represented on the face of
the one "with me in paradise"--it obscures his identity, as the superior half of
the tree, and the nature of ecstasy, surpass all self concept. Kether (The
"Crown" of the "Father") resides at the apex.
